WSU Libraries Policy on Durable Linking

Until the recent past, the WSU Libraries were actively involved in maintaining links to articles, databases, and journals within Blackboard.  With the transition to Angel, the WSU Libraries (and DDP) will no longer offer this service.

Maintaining these links is quite time consuming, because changes, publishing embargoes, and other "link rot" issues require constant attention.  Both DDP and the Libraries believe a more sustainable approach to this issue, and ultimately one more valuable to student learning, is to provide students with an article citation and let them find the article via WSU's subscription databases.  Encouraging students to learn and use these skills also helps us comply with copyright requirements.

The Libraries have created a set of instructions, and an online tutorial which demonstrates how students can find full text when they are starting with the citation.  A number of classes are already using this method of accessing readings.  This past Fall, we implemented this approach in several DDP-merged courses with good results as long as the students were encouraged to view the "Citation to Article" tutorial.

If you or your department wishes to construct links to articles from subscription databases, you are free to do so.  Be aware that you are responsible for maintaining the links, and making them work for both on and off campus students.  Information on how to do this is included in this guide.

THE WSU LIBRARIES WILL KEEP INFORMATION ON DURABLE LINKS AS UP TO DATE AS TIME PERMITS.  AT ANY GIVEN TIME, THE INFORMATION ON THESE PAGES MAY BE INACCURATE DUE TO VENDOR OR PUBLISHER CHANGES OVER WHICH WE HAVE NO CONTROL.
